Abstract:
It has become normal practice in hospital and immediately post-partum to subject the breastfeeding dyad to numerous forms of measurements, ostensibly to ensure the breastfed baby consumes enough breastmilk to gain weight adequately. Unfortunately, these measurements, many of which have become strict policy, have evolved from a lack of awareness and misconceptions about how breastfeeding works and how the breastfeeding baby gets milk. This talk examines the various measurements that are used, the evidence that contradicts such use, and the potential hazards of using them.
