Abstract:
A common concern for parents and caregivers alike as a preterm infant approaches discharge is how to transition them from mostly bottle feeding, to mostly or exclusively breastfeeding. It’s important to understand that key pieces of this transition need to happen right from the start of the infant’s time in the NICU. Skin-to-skin contact and non-nutritive sucking at the breast help to lay the foundation for successful breastfeeding. This presentation will guide the learner through the full journey of the transition from bottle to breast, starting with skin-to-skin contact and establishing robust milk production, and including common oral challenges and approaches to management and setting families up with a discharge plan for successful breastfeeding.
